I am a painting contractor, not a professional drywall installer. But I do maybe one or two small drywall jobs a year. Previously, I would have to spend $30/day to rent a lift. The local rental store near my place closed, so I was forced to look at purchasing a drywall lift. I once looked at picking one up a little while back, but they all ran about $700. Once I found this one on Amazon I couldn't help but be skeptical. After reading the reviews and adding on the shipping costs, this turned out to be the lowest price out of them all so I took a chance and ordered it to finish the drywall ceiling in my kitchen.
The lift arrived on time, in a large cardboard box. One or two of the plastic bumpers were broke, but they are unimportant. I put them on and wrapped them with duct tape, and that corrected the problem.
So, the lift: It is built strong. The parts all move well, and everything I've seen so far is no less of quality then the $700 lifts out there. I love this thing. This will pay for itself after one week.
If you are afraid of picking up somehting flimsy, trust me, this is well worth the money.

I have hung my fair share of drywall and over the years have used several different models of hoists, most of them MUCH more expensive than this one and none of them do the job any better. Most recently I spent $[...]/day renting a hoist that was on its last legs and decided to just buy one. After doing the research, I couldn't justify spending 10 times (or more) than I spent on this one. I figured I'd give it a shot and if it turned out to be a piece of crap I'd chalk it up to a lesson learned. The hoist arrived on time and like many of the other reviews I've read, looking like it had been shipped to Iraq and back, given the appearance of the packaging. I don't know if it is the weight or what, but the box was literally falling apart around the hoist. The hoist itself, however, was undamaged. I put it together in about three minutes using a flathead screwdriver one time and got down to business. The hoist works as well as any other hoist, even the high dollar ones. I laugh when I think about people spending $[...] for a lift that isn't any better than this one. Save yourself a ton of money and just get this one...
3.) Good product, great price

Had seen product in other "catalogs" but at much higher price. Amazon's price was outstanding. Shipping was significant due to weight, but total cost was still in the bargain category. Tool is great and is everything it promised to be. Is very well constructed but will break down into managable pieces that one person can handle. Have used it for 10' ceilings and wall applications and it is a lifesaver. Overall, "a good buy."

A buddy of mine and I needed to drywall about 1500 sq feet on the 1st floor of his house and I didn't feel like lifting and holding drywall over head and this made our job so easy it was unbelievable. After his project, I used it to hang shop lights in my shop and it made it a one man job. It really is possible to hang sheets on the ceiling or upper part of the wall with just 1 person, although it is much easier with 2. Considering it is about $80-100/day to rent a lift, this is well worth the money and once disassembled it doesn't take up much room. Assembly and disassembly are very simple and only takes a minute or so. For the money I would highly recommend this product.

6.) Excellent Value

For just $200 (plus another $100 or so for shipping), I was skeptical. But renting a drywall lift was going to be $85 per day, plus all the hassle of picking it up, moving it, and taking it back, plus the pressure of getting all the ceilings done within a minimum number of days...
So I ordered the cheapie Troy lift. It arrived inside of a week by FedEx Ground. Package was undamaged, all hardward was present as were instructions (need a magnifying glass for the instructions).
The lift works well. The only significant downsides are: (1) if you forget to put the brake on, the whole thing descends very rapidly, spinning the crank as it goes, which could cause injury; and (2) It is possible to put the brake on too hard, in which case you can have significant difficulty getting it to release. I'm sure the braking system is a big reason for the low price of this unit compared to the higher-priced spreads.
It seems possible to dissassemble the lift for storage, but I will probably sell mine locally if I can when I am done with it. Putting up ceilings is not something I am going to volunteer for anymore.

This product was everything and more than advertised. I am finishing a shop and needed to reach 8 foot ceilings as well as 14 foot. This product provides great options for both. It is simple to get the lift positioned for any part of the ceiling and the lift holds the rock tight against the stringers. I was equally impressed with the performance on the wall. I used it for all rock that was above the first course. Just push it over to the wall on the hooks, tip the rock over against the studs and raise into position. Push the base in and the rock is tight and in place, ready for screws. My shop is 30 x 40 with an upper deck and I am doing it by myself. This machine has been simple, effective and a true life saver.

I was skepticle before buying but it was the best $180 I ever spent on a tool. We are flipping a house in our community and had to rip out all the plaster and drywall. As we were getting closer to installing the ceiling sheets we started to really dread trying to force up drywall sheets on on our own. Our enthusiam for the project was at an all time low! So someone on the team suggested a lift. We just couldn't belive it! Dread turned into relief and we finished in a fraction of the time. Why didn't we get this sooner!!!

I figured a "great deal" on line was another screw-over by shady sellers. I unpacked and assembled it and it is fine. All the rubber is there and in general, the lifter is in excellent shape. Not only do I recommend this fantastic deal, but being a frugal buyer, I'll be buying more from this seller. The included instructions suck, but if you need them, you probably shouldn't be buying one. This is a professional grade piece of equipment.

We are finishing our basement and were dreading placing the drywall on the ceiling. In our first basement, we used 2x4 nailed into "T"s to hold the sheets to the ceiling, although this worked the effort for two adults was painfull and frustrating. We got the job done, but it was not fun, and it took months for a medium sized place. Our existing place is bigger and much more complex with lights and higher ceilings. I had heard about drywall lifts, and the cost for a rental shocked me - especially since we are lucky if we can get an hour or two each day to work on the project.
First impression on the Troy Hoist is that it is solidly made, thick steel and clearly made to last. The nice thing is that it comes in three main parts already, and no real tools are required to assemble. The instruction manual needs work, the instructions were worded poorly and the diagrams confusing, however the design makes it impossible to put together incorrectly. It took me about 20 minutes and it was ready. The first time I put a penel up on the ceiling was a revelation - I could raise it within an inch of the ceiling, roll and position the panel, get it firmed up and the drwall screws in place in 30 minutes. It a great product if you are doing some ceiling work - just dont be surprised if your friends and neighbours suddenly want to borrow it.

I have never used a hanging helper before but I can say putting 12' sheets on a ceiling is now a 1 man job. Ceilings are now trivial as long as you have some floor space to work with. Walls I still have not figure out completely. This still looks like a 2 person job, especially if you have any receptacles to align. You can do 12' horizontal runs with one person, but it is slow and painful alone. Operation is smooth and solid. It breaks down into 5 bulky pieces for storage.
21.) Good tool - great price

The lift arrived on time and was very easy to assemble. I haven't used the extension for the 19' ceiling yet, but I have used the lift to install drywall on a "shed" style ceiling that peaked at about 14'. The lift and braking mechanism worked smoothly. The only concern I have is that the slide-out extension arms don't hold the sheet "flat" - the ends of the 8' long sheets I installed sagged a bit which made it a little difficult to butt the end of the sheet against the end of another sheet that was installed, and thus I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 stars. The slide-out arms are box beams and should have plenty of strength so I might try wrapping some tape around the rubber caps which will hopefully raise the ends of the drywall sheet and thus flatten it out for ceiling installations. Otherwise I think that this is a great tool and well worth the money.

Upper support frame, that inserts into the replaceable lift extention (slider) would not fit. The shorter length slide assy (original) fit OK. But, when you go to assy. the taller, high lift extention, the piviot post would not insert into the mating reciever. I had to buy a 29/32" drill bit (1/2" shank) for $42.00 and drill out the bushing. The second unit I ordered had the same problem. Drilling out the steel bushing / pivot point took about one hour. Haven't heard from "Max Tool" on what will be their response. At least pay for the drill bit.
Otherwise, I think it is a great tool and I would recommend buying two if your handling 12' sheets at the max extention hieght, just for safety. I have 16 foot ceilings in my shop. 509-764-6656

I used this to drywall my new master bedroom. Installed 4x12 sheets on ceiling and walls. worked great but has a few issues that can be fixed rather easily.
1) outriggers that extend out to support the long sheets (4x12 or 4x8) are not level with the main support so getting it flat to the ceiling is not possible. I added 2 pieces of 3/4" strapping to the end support to bring it back up to close to level on a 4x12. So this is not a big deal...
2) cable always winds to the left so when the panel is just about to the ceiling the cable has built up a large stack on the left side of the wheel. It will then finally slip to the right which cases the lift to drop quickly about 1/4". This is not a big deal, just makes a big noise and since you are under it, freaks you out. I would use a glove and push it to the right while raising it to avoid this. Use a glove though, cable is rough...
